JOB #2 - THINKING QUESTION

What are some internal conflicts that Peyton Farquhar might be wrestling with throughout the story?

  1. At the beginning Peyton seems to have no regret for his attempt to hurt the Union army. But then the thought of his family comes to his mind and he longs to escape and runaway to see them. This may be because Peyton did not say goodbye before he left, or he suddenly became more thankful for everything he was about to lose. The latter of those is showcased when he sees his wife and she looks more beautiful then ever and all he wants to do is touch her. So I feel like Peyton struggled between the Confederate cause and what he would lose fighting for that cause.

  2. Peyton was imagining things that made him happy where he was made new again. I think his internal conflict was that he didn’t say goodbye to his wife because in his daydream, it just abruptly ended right before he could embrace his wife. His brain went dead.
